German Fast Facts
- German is the official language in seven countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, as well as parts of Italy and Belgium).
- German is a very popular second-language choice in the English speaking world (and also among Japanese students – 68% of whom study German). This is largely due to its strong international business presence: German companies provide approximately 700,000 jobs in the United States, and US companies have created approximately the same number of jobs in Germany.
- German is a varied language. It has a number of dialects which may not be understood at all by those who speak only standard German.
- German is a highly inflected language: for instance, nouns can be inflected for gender (masculine, feminine, or neuter), case (nominative, genitive, dative, and accusative) and number (singular and plural). This is just one reason why German has a reputation for being a grammatical challenge for second language learners. (Though our instructors make it look like cake…)
