Courses Available
Private English Lessons – Our private courses are designed to meet the individual needs of the student. With the help of an experienced tutor, you customize the class according to your goals. You may choose to improve your overall fluency by building vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar skills. Or you can focus your classes on a specific language area: business skills such as resume preparation, presentations, or business writing; academic language in your field; or the practical language skills needed for daily living. Intensive courses are available too.
Classes include valuable tips on living and working in the U.S. too. Our English teachers see themselves not just as language tutors, but as a resource for expatriates finding their way through Greenville and adjusting to American culture and habits.
Private lessons generally meet in two-hour blocks and can be scheduled at the time and location of your choice.
Group English Lessons – Wetzel offers group English lessons for 10 weeks each fall and spring for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced students. Our most popular group classes are the Professional English Course (Advanced) and the Culture and Conversation Course (Intermediate / Advanced). Thursday English Workshops are also offered on a variety of topics (Negotiations, Idioms, Business Writing, and more). Check our current group classes here.
Customized English group classes can be arranged at any time.

Testing and Certification
A Wetzel language evaluation is available to all students at the beginning and end of lessons. Wetzel also issues certificates for language classes upon request. If you would like to take a standardized test, we can help you prepare for the TOEFL (for university entry) or the ACTFL OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) for an official certification of your language level.
Our English Teachers
Our English teachers have a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds, but they all share a love of language and teaching and an appreciation for other cultures. They get a real kick out of helping internationals make the most of their time here. Most have traveled, lived, or worked abroad. At present, 100% of our English teachers have advanced degrees – Masters Degrees including Linguistics, TESOL, foreign language teaching, Business, and Speech Communication.
English Fast Facts
English is the preferred language for doing business internationally and is the most widely learned second language in the world. In fact, more people speak English as a second language than as a native language, even though English has the third largest number of native speakers in the world (behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish).
English is known for its inconsistent (dare we say chaotic?) pronunciation and spelling and its vast and nuanced vocabulary. Both are due to the origins of English – it’s a stewpot of linguistic influences: It’s a West Germanic language (brought to Great Britain by the Anglo-Saxons) heavily affected by Latin and Norman-French (hence the high number of cognates it shares with Romance languages) and even Old Norse. We English speakers are shameless borrowers; it’s the least we can do to share our language back with the 250-350 million ESL learners worldwide!
